Foam Rolling For A Good Cause

How often do you have the chance to help yourself while helping others at the same time?  Sharon Manzuk, owner of Pukka Pilates & Physical Therapy in San Diego joined forces with Balanced Body and a San Diego youth charity to help her community do just that.

Group of people holding up a bannerIn recognition of Physical Therapy awareness month Pukka Pilates offered a special foam roller class.  Not only did participants learn proper foam roller techniques and get a foam roller to take home, but all proceeds from the class went to help young athletes struggling with an illness or injury.

The class was filled to capacity with participants all happily rolling on their personal foam rollers donated by Balanced Body. They learned how using a foam roller at home can help improve circulation, massage muscles, break down knots and work through trigger points.

An added bonus to this class was that all proceeds went to a local youth charity.  Pukka Pilates & Physical Therapy was pleased to partner with Support Young Athletes (SYA) a charity for kids, run by kids. Each board member is an athlete age 11-18 who desires to help other young athletes struggling with financial need due to a catastrophic illness or injury.

Foam roller workoutSYA’s most recent beneficiaries were Rileigh, a 10 year old gymnast, and Issac, a 16 year old high school cheerleader.  Rileigh was diagnosed with Perthes Disease.  Perthes stops blood flow going to the hip bone. Rileigh has been making tremendous progress and is very hopeful she will return to gymnastics.  Issac was involved in a car accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down.  He is working very hard on building his strength and learning to adapt to life in a wheelchair. Issac plans to return to cheer and start snowboarding and surfing.

Thanks to Balanced Body for supporting this effort!
