Facility Focus: Sun Coast Pilates

When I moved to Florida in 1992 with my elderly father, I needed a job that could be worked around taking care of my Dad, who had bladder cancer. As an insulin dependent diabetic since age 14, I also needed something to keep myself active. He urged me to get into the fitness industry. I became a Personal Trainer and aquatics instructor. At fitness conventions, I was drawn to the Pilates booths, and embarked on the journey to become a Pilates instructor as well. I had five years before the cancer spread and I lost my father in 1997. At that time, I was working for two physicians as the Fitness Director. From that position, I developed a following of clients and I decided to open my own Pilates and fitness studio to honor him.

Having a very small budget, we painted the studio with sale paint, found an easy to convert box space in a small strip mall. Back in 1997, no one in the area knew what Pilates exercise was, so I included personal training, yoga, tai chi and Pilates mat. After many years of trying out Pilates equipment at conventions, I purchased Balanced Body equipment – one studio Reformer and one Allegro when that came out. Every two years I purchased another Allegro or piece of equipment from Balanced Body. And slowly I converted all the personal training, fitness and most yoga clients to Pilates exercise. Needing to be able to staff our growing studio, I became a Balanced Body Master Instructor, now teaching 25 plus instructor training modules yearly.

In 2000, I had to opportunity to bring the studio to a better location. And in 2002, my now husband was taking yoga lessons, converted to Pilates and joined me in the business. Every so many years we upgraded the equipment and remodeled the studio. Our studio stayed at the forefront of offering all Balanced Body has to offer including adding the CoreAlign in 2010, the Guillotine, MOTR and Bodhi in following years. In 2017, a client approached me about a building her husband wanted to purchase and asked if we would be interested in going in as tenants. We walked in and could visualize that this was it for us, though it would need renovations. The new landlord custom built a state-of-the art Pilates studio for us – after twenty years our dream studio was here.

Now in our 21st year of operation, we have the studio we always envisioned with a fabulous staff, all (but one) Balanced Body trained by myself. In addition to Balanced Body Pilates and CoreAlign instructor training I teach, through the years we have hosted renown Pilates presenters for additional Pilates continuing education. We are the Clearwater / Tampa Bay area’s only fully equipped Pilates studio, the oldest studio, where we offer the finest in Pilates training for our clients and instructors from around the world alike.
